Anybody here in Taiwan (or more specifically Taipei) from the US or was back from study there has been missing American-style Chinese takeaway? Or anybody is curious about the popular “Chinese takeaway box” from those US movies? 😉
Well the last question is actually part of our curious visit to Good Cup (口杯食堂) near Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. Probably some of you are also watching too many US movies like us, and so Chinese takeaway box is like so ‘WOW’ and must-try.
Having been roaming around greater Taipei and blogs too, there seems not many places offering this kind of unique experience are available. We’ve bumped into a small stall in Gongguan area which sells Italian fast food in typical “Chinese takeaway box” but hey.. Italian food in Chinese food box? WHAT? It is not wrong but compared to Good Cup, we just don’t really feel the attraction – probably next time when we get the chance we might try that.
We finally got to try Good Cup last weekend when we dropped by to Eslite Art House for movie. As we’re completely aware and certain we would get problems getting our before-movie lunch in their basement (that place is simply crowded as hell on weekends), my smart partner suggested us to have our first Chinese fast food takeaway for lunch (though we did sit down there and eat instead of really get it taken-away).
Unexpectedly there were quite a lot of people when we arrived; a group (about 10-12) of friends gathering, a couple and a lady. We grabbed our seats at the long high table. Oh before that, we did make our order and pay in the counter first. Good Cup is indeed a simple canteen; they only have 5 options of boxes: Garlic chicken (蒜香雞丁), Three-cup chicken (三杯雞), Basil pork (打拋豬), Sweet and sour pork (糖醋里肌), and Thai spicy beef (泰式辣炒牛).
All equally looks quite appetizing, but their Garlic chicken appeals the most: in the picture the chicken bites look crunchy and there are some fried seasoning crumbs, which is totally my style 8-). My partner opted for Three-cup chicken as he heard there is a saying in Taiwan that says “restaurants in Taiwan that cannot cook acceptable Three-cup chicken is not true Taiwanese restaurant”. You can choose to have any of the 5 as ala-carte for NTD. 89 (or exceptionally 99 for Spicy beef), or you can make it a set for NTD. 129 (or 139) with additional 2 choices of side dishes (you can choose among 4 daily side dishes) and a beverage or soup.
They required 5-8 minuted for serving the meal.
TA-DAAAA! We were surprised as the portion is quite big and the taste is nice too!
We notice all people there were eating incorrectly though – we suppose to open up the box into plate-shape, right? Probably they considered it’s too wasteful to break open the nicely designed and printed box? 😆
We really recommend any Chinese food fans to try Good Cup. It is nice to try out “American-style Chinese takeaway” experience here in Taipei rather than flying far-away to US land too!
